Exciting News & Events

  • SAMMC faculty, residents and alumni finished up another great SOMOS meeting in Keystone. As mentioned in the "Leadership in Action" blog post, SAMMC continues to lead throughout military and national orthopaedics.  In addition to Matt Schmitz (2009) and Chris LeBrun (2006) leading on the national stage, other alumni are advancing their careers through their personal commitment and the excellence of their SAMMC training.  Tom Dowd (2010) was named the Army's representative to the AAOS Board of Councilors and, along with along Andy Sheean (2016), the co-Program Chair for the 2019 SOMOS meeting .  Jeanne Patzkowski (2014) was elected as the new SOMOS Research Committee Chair and Patrick Osborn (Fac mbr) and Tierney Shannon (2020) are leading the SOMOS Education Committee's collaboration with AOA-CORD to develop a national faculty development program to improve resident education.

  • Tierney Shannon (2020) has been selected by the American Orthopaedic Association as  the Association of American Medical Colleges-Organization of Resident Representatives (AAMC-ORR) Liaison on the CORD Academics Committee.

  •  Matt Schmitz (2009) will join Ted Parsons (1991), Mark Miller (1992) and Marc Dehart (1994) on the faculty for the 1st Miller Review in Riyadh.

  • Jessica Rivera (2012) has separated from the Army and is heading to Baltimore for a pediatric deformity fellowship at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopaedics and International Center for Limb Lengthening.  Jessica was critical to the department's research portfolio. She personally contributed $9M in grant funds and contributed to SAMMC becoming the #9/67 METRC enrolling sites.  As APD-Research, residents published over 50 peer reviewed publications.  She will be missed and we wish her the best of luck.

  • Matt Schmitz (2009) and Patrick Osborn (Fac Mbr) will be inducted into the AOA at the annual meeting in Boston this June.

  • Patrick Osborn (Faculty Mbr)  is co-chairing the AOA/CORD Annual Meeting in June.

  • Peter Murray (Faculty Mbr; current ABOS President) will be replacing  Ted Parsons (1991) as Chair of the ACGME Ortho RRC.

  • The SAUSHEC Orthopaedic Residency would like to welcome Ms. Pam Spradley as the new Program Coordinator working with Ms. Wanda Williams.

Travis Burns (2009), AJ Johnson (2004) and Matt Schmitz (2009) at the SAMMMCAA AAOS reception in New Orleans.
