A Special Thanks

In these unprecedented times, delivering patient care and educating residents has undergone drastic change.  The Department and Residency Program led innovative changes to maintain patient access to orthopaedic surgical care while limiting faculty and resident COVID exposure and protecting our ability to fulfill DOD's mission.  The Residency quickly adapted and instituted virtual learning platforms.  Recognizing the stress of the situation, the Department employed technology to ensure wellness and bridge the gap created by social distancing and alternating work schedules.  Faculty and residents together have overcome obstacles and ensured mission success.  The leadership of the faculty and the commitment of the residents and staff have been unparalleled in the local community response the the COVID pandemic.

The Alumni Association has been critical in supporting these initiatives by providing additional on-line learning opportunities and virtual connectivity for the Department.  Without the continued support of our sponsors, the Association could not have supported the uninterrupted training of our residents. The resurgence of COVID-19 in San Antonio drastically altered the annual Omer Day and Graduation events but also highlighted the commitment of our sponsors.  We are humbled by the dedication of our sponsors despite the economic challenges faced during the pandemic and the resolute support of all those who were able to attend.

While the Research Day, Golf Tournament and Graduation Banquet were decidedly not the norm, the academic program highlighted the Department's commitment to research and leadership excellence.  Jim Ficke (Fac mbr) unfortunately could not attend but provided perspective and wisdom to persevere during these times.  Our graduates' accomplishments were still celebrated with the family and friends that supported their preparation for careers as surgeons.

The Association, Department and Residency Program are all eternally grateful to all that participated and supported us this year.  That support has never been more important, and will allow us to plan and execute another successful year.
